World Ophthalmic Congress in Hong Kong from 26-06-2008 to 02-07-2008

Dr J Biswas, Dr L.Vijaya, Dr E. Ravindra Mohan , Dr Amit Nagpal , Dr Mamta Agarwal , Dr Muna P Bhende attended conference course in “The design, conduct, and management of clinical trials in eye research by ARVO foundations for eye research”. They discussed principles of clinical trials, design of clinical trials, components of protocol, operational aspects and interim monitoring analysis.
Headache Clinic on 11-07-2008
One stop clinic for Headache
In its continued search for excellence Sankara Nethralaya has put together an exclusive headache clinic at main campus. Everyone of us has experienced headache at one time or other. Headache is probably the most common health complaint of the human race, which affects the quality of daily life's. There are very few centers of excellence dedicates purely to headache suffers. Even in the developed countries like USA and UK there are only a handful of reputed headache clinics providing in patient care for management of primary headache.
The question arises as how are the headache patients managed at the present time?
Most of the patients seek care for general practitioners, ophthalmologists, allergists, ENT specialists and alternative medicine specialists. After all the secondary caused of headaches and ruled out by clinical exam, C.T scan etc. They may be referred neurologist or choose to see a neurologist themselves. By the rime they get to this stage they have already suffered headache for years.
The SN Headache clinic is available for patients from 11-07-2008 and it would look after the serious conditions causing headache by surgery or other appropriate means.
Guest Lecture by Dr J.Fielding Hejtmancik from National Institutes of health USA on 28-07-08
Dr J.Fielding Hejtmancik MD,PHD Ophthalmic Genetics and visual function branch from National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda MD Visited Sankara Nethralaya and gave a lecture on Autosomal Recessive Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy associated with mutations in LRP5.
SN Team At Mauritius
SN has successfully signed an MOU with the Mauritius Government for establishing a branch of Sankara Nethralaya at Mauritius .

Zambia visit for Cataract Surgery from 18-06-2008 to 08-07-2008

A team from Sankara Nethralaya went to Zambia for a cataract surgery camp. The camp was conducted at Nchanga Hospital , Chingola. 172 cataract surgeries were performed by Dr Rashmin Gandhi and Dr Sandeep Mark Thirumalai. The team was ably supported by Dr Banulakshmi, Mr Banukumar,
Ms Vijayalakshmi, Mr Suresh Balaji, Ms Subhashini, Ms Devi, Mr Palani and Mr Arasu. Guest Lecture: Application of epidemiology in the world of ophthalmology on 09-07-2008

Dr Sophia Pathai from International center for Eye Health, London visited Sankara Nethralaya. She met Dr Lingam Gopal our Chairman and had a tour of the hospital. At 11.00 am along with her Dr J Biswas, Dr Sudharshan, Dr Mamta Agarwal went to YRG care center to meet Dr N.Kumarasamy. She visited our epidemiology study unit of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. She visited our basic science department. She met Dr R.R.Sudhir. In the evening she gave a lecture “world of epidemiology in ophthalmology”. She is interested in collaborative research in AIDS with Sankara Nethralaya and YRG center.

Dr Sripriya Krishnamurthy gave the Chief Guest a hospital tour of Jaslok Community Ophthalmic Centre, a unit of Sankara Nethralaya.
Ronnie George briefed the Chief Guest about the Glaucoma and presented the activities of the Department.
Dr Rajiv Raman introduced his team members of Diabetic Retinopathy Department and presented a Multi Media Presentation on the activities of the Diabetic Retinopathy project from 2003. Subsequently the Chief Guest was taken to the main hospital of the Sankara Nethralaya and Dr. Lingam Gopal took him around the Department of Vitreoretina.
Ms Akila Ganesan presented on the partnership between Lions Clubs and Sankara Nethralaya from the year 1997.
Dr Rajiv Raman presented a project on Diabetic Retinopathy with the principle of HUB and spokes.
Dr Rashmin Anil Kumar Gandhi presented a project on E learning.
Dr Krishnakumar presented a research project on stem cells.
Dr H.N.Madhavan presented a research project on New Vision of vision research foundation.
Dr Angaryarkannai presented a research project on
Tears Lipidomics of the eibomian Gland dysfunction (MGD) and
Intolerance to contact lens wear for Biomarkers identification by Liquid Chromatography Mass spectrometry.
Lion Amarasuriya responded well to the presentation and also the visit for the hospital. He thanked for the hospitality extended to him and he said he has enriched with the knowledge about the compassionate eye care given by the Sankara Nethralaya.
Cataract Screening Camp at SN, Rameswaram held on 26-07-2008 and 27-07-2008
A Cataract screening camp was organized at our centre in Rameswaram in coordination with Dr Krishnakumar (Principal – ESO) and his team of Optometrists on 26-07-2008 and 27-07-2008. A total of 141 patients were screened and 26 patients were identified for cataract surgery.

Mr. N.Sundar has been elevated as Deputy Manager- Commercial. Mr. S.Viswanathan has been elevated as Director –Optometry & Optical Services. Mr. A.Padmanabhan will be Executive In charge for Transport Services.
