Recognizing him as an outstanding teacher and researcher in Medical Microbiology Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed University), Chennai has conferred on Prof. Madhavan the honour of Professor Emeritus.
Lifetime Service Award for his service to community, our country and indeed to the whole world in the field of Medical Microbiology by the Rotary Club of Chennai Mid City RI District 3230 on 20th December, 2003 at Boat Club, Chennai.
He has been awarded by the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists to receive the most prestigious Dr. H.I. Jhala award during the annual meeting of the association in 2004 at Lucknow.

In the year 2000, Authoratory.com adjudged Dr. H. N. Madhavan as the “key opinion leader” among 697,858 leading cientists and his highest rank is 1 when compared to all other authors using the key word ‘Eye Infections’.
He has been awarded the “Genomic Pioneer Award” for Outstanding Contributions in the field of Genomics - Ocimum Biosolutions .The award was announced on 30th Sep ‘08 at HUGO’s International genomic Meeting held at Hyderabad.
XXVII IAPM AP chapter Annual Conference & CME oration “KAMARAJU BAPAIAH SRIMATI SAROJINI DEVI ORATION” and received a gold medal.

The Vice chancellor of University of Madras Dr. Thiruvasagam honoured “ 30 women Alumni ” of Madras University in various fields of Arts & Science in recognition of their contribution and service to society on the “International Women’s day” 8th March 2010. Dr. K. Lily Therese, Professor & HOD of Microbiology, L & T Microbiology Research Centre, Vision Research Foundation, was one of the recipient of this award, for the contribution in “Molecular Microbiology”. It is another feather added to achievements of Vision Research Foundation.

CONFERENCE / PCR WET WORKSHOP CONDUCTED BY THE
CENTRE – UNDER THE AEGIS OF IAMM
Conducted One day Chapter meet of IAMM (Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists) – Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Chapter on 24th January 1997 in which more than 75 delegates participated.
PCR Wet Workshop on “PCR for detection of infective agents in clinical specimens” on 19th and 20th April 2002. There were 25 participants (Assistant / Associate Professors and Post Graduates) from Medical Colleges and Research Institutions from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
One day Chapter meet of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists – TamilNadu and Pondicherry Chapter on 23rd August 2003, on the theme “ Application of RT - PCR and Microarray in Microbiology” in which there were more than 150 delegates from TamilNadu and Pondicherry.
PCR Wet Workshop on “PCR for detection of infectious agents” on 19 and 20 October 2005. There were 25 participants (Assistant / Associate Professors and Post Graduates) from 14 Medical Colleges and Research Institutions from all over the country. It was well appreciated by the participants.
On 24th February 2007 we conducted a one-day CME programme jointly with Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM) There were 250 participants including Research scientists from Microbiology department, Sankara Nethralaya , There were two guest lectures on the theme of the CME ”Newer antituberculosis drugs: antibiotics from untapped sources and from synthesized compounds“ and 17 paper presentations by Post Graduates / Research scientists from 7 Institutions in and around Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry region.
The three days Wet Workshop on “Recent techniques in Molecular Microbiology” between 11, 12 &13th February 2010 for IAMM members under the banner of VRF-IAMM TN Chapter. Dr. K. Lily Therese – Convenor, Dr. J. Malathi is the Organising Secretary & Dr. B. Mahalakshmi – Treasurer. There were 21 participants. The Participants were faculty from 9 Medical colleges from Tamil Nadu and one from Kerala. The participants were given hands-on-training on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT- PCR). There was demonstration on Real time PCR, DNA sequencing & PCR-RFLP techniques.
The WHONET training Programme Conducted under VidyaSagar Institute of Biomedical Technology and Science at L & T Microbiology Research Centre from 21st -25th March 2011 on “Bi-regional Workshop on Laboratory Based Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance”. There were 18 (17-International and 1- National) participants and 6 Facilitators (4 from WHO, 2 from SN).
INSTITUTION OF VRF IAMM BEST PAPER AWARD

L & T Microbiology Research Centre, Vision Research Foundation instituted an award in the name of “VRF-IAMM Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry chapter” for best paper award to a young scientist with a cash prize and a certificate to be presented to the winner every year during one of the IAMM local chapter meeting.

In the year 2008, Ms. P. Sowmya Senior Research Fellow, L & T Microbiology Research centre received the first award of VRF-IAMM Best paper award for her presentation of a research paper entitled “Analysis of mixed infections with multiple genotypes of Human Cytomegalovirus in immunocompromised patients” during the SOZOCON– MICRO 2008 jointly organized by IAMM (TN & Py chapter) at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical college and Hospital, Puducherry on 19th January 2008.

In the year 2009, Ms. H. Anusha Senior Research fellow, L & T Microbiology Research centre received the first award of VRF- IAMM Best paper award for her presentation of a research paper entitled “Phylogenetic analysis of clinical Herpes Simplex Virus 1 isolates targeting 269 nucleotide region within glycoprotein G and 410 nucleotide region within glycoprotein I” in TN IAMM local chapter meeting on Hospital acquired infection at Madurai Medical College, Madurai (HAICON 2009) on 2nd May 2009.

In the Year 2010, Dr. K. Subha, Stanley Medical college Hospital, received the award of VRF- IAMM Best paper award for her presentation of a research paper entitled “Bacteriology of abscesses with special reference to phenotyping and genotyping of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Stanley medical college hospital, Chennai, Tamilnadu” during the CME Programme conducted under the banner of IAMM at Kanyakumari Medical College at Nagercoil on 29th July 2010.

In the year 2011, Ms. M. Sowmiya, Junior Scientist, received the award for her research paper entitled “Prevalence of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing and integrons carrying Gram negative bacilli belonging to Enterobacteriaceae among Ocular isolates - A hospital based study” during the CME programme on “Ocular infections 2011” conducted on 23rd July 2011 organised by Department of Microbiology, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai as part of IAMM - TN & Pondicherry chapter meet.

JOINT VENTURE OF EXTERNAL QUALITY
CONTROL ASSESSMENT SCHEME (EQAS)
UNDER THE AEGIS OF IAMM

As decided at the Annual Congress in the General Body Meeting of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM) 2006 in Nagpur, External Quality Assessment System programme (EQAS) are being conducted as a joint venture by L & T Microbiology Research Centre, Sankara Nethralaya and Amala Medical institute, Thrissur, Kerala from January 2007 onwards.

The programme involves distribution of four Quality control packages sent during the months of January, April, July and October, every year. Each package consists of a 1) Direct Smear for evaluation, 2) Culture for identification of a bacteria/ fungal pathogen isolated from clinical specimens and serological testing to be carried out by the participant.

The reports sent by the participants are evaluated by the co-coordinators and sent back to the participants. Participation in minimum of 3 packages by the members is essential for receiving the participation certificate that is issued at the end of a cycle i.e a year. The overall performance of a participant is also communicated them. There are 600 members belonging to Medical colleges, Medical Institutions and Private clinical laboratories are participants in the programme.

Participation in EQAS enables clinical laboratories to assess their status regarding the quality of techniques followed, skill of the laboratory staff. The participation in EQAS programme also is essential for getting National Accreditation Board for Laboratories certification (NABL).
