Sankara Nethralaya, a unit of the Medical Research Foundation, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act of 1860, stands as a not-for-profit institution dedicated to providing world-class ophthalmic care. Established by the visionary ophthalmologist Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath in 1978, the institution was inspired by Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt's wish to provide affordable, high-quality eye care to the underserved. Over the years, Sankara Nethralaya has become a trusted name in eye care, providing top-tier services across India.
To extend these services to eastern and north eastern India, Sankara Nethralaya opened its doors in Kolkata in December 2002. Embraced with warmth and trust by the people of West Bengal, the hospital soon expanded. In July 2007, it moved to a temporary location at Raja Subodh Mullick Square and with overwhelming local support, a permanent hospital was established in Mukundapur. Constructed on 0.55 acres of land with the collaboration of the Paschim Banga Rajya Pratibandhi Sammilani, Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya was inaugurated on January 21, 2009, by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
The Mukundapur hospital, a super-specialty center, serves not just West Bengal but also patients from Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. Under the leadership of Medical Director Dr. Sujata Guha, ably coordinated by Deputy Director Dr Rupak Roy and a dedicated team of 13 consultants, the hospital treats 500-600 patients daily across all sub-specialties of ophthalmology.
An entire floor of our hospital is dedicated to community service, providing free treatment to indigent patients. With two state-of-the-art operation theatres we ensure that those who cannot afford eye care still receive the highest quality treatment. Our Teleophthalmology wing extends this care to the rural and semi-urban regions of West Bengal and Jharkhand, bringing eye care to the doorsteps of underserved communities.
