He is an ophthalmologist who has specialized in uveitis and ophthalmic pathology. He has done fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery from Sankara Nethralaya and fellowship in ophthalmic pathology from Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, USA. He has published 527 articles in indexed journals, 65 chapters and five books on uveitis and one book on ophthalmic pathology. He has mentored 48 uveitis fellows. He has received 53 awards including Hari OM Ashram Alembic research award from ICMR given by the president of India.He is the first to describe ocular lesions in AIDS in India.
