Sankara Nethralaya, a unit of the Medical Research Foundation, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act of 1860, stands as a not-for-profit institution dedicated to providing world-class ophthalmic care. Established by the visionary ophthalmologist Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath in 1978, the institution was inspired by Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt's wish to provide affordable, high-quality eye care to the underserved. Over the years, Sankara Nethralaya has become a trusted name in eye care, providing top-tier services across India.
To extend these services to eastern and north eastern India, Sankara Nethralaya opened its doors in Kolkata in December 2002. Embraced with warmth and trust by the people of West Bengal, the hospital soon expanded. In July 2007, Sankara Nethralaya moved to Raja Subodh Mullick Square. Sankara Nethralaya at Raja Subodh Mullick Square was inaugurated in July, 2007, by the then Hon’ble Health Minister of West Bengal, Shri Surjya Kanta Mishra.
