Note: All specimens should be transported at 4°C and transported in ice to the laboratory with in
24 hours of collection.

Instructions to patients for collection of clinical specimens for Biochemical tests

1. Fasting Specimen: For all “Fasting Specimen” collection the patient is instructed to have dinner the previous night not later than 9 p.m. (the range for fasting is 8 to 12 hours) and following this not to eat or drink except water till he reports to the laboratory. The below mentioned test are to be collected and sent to SN- Main Special biochemistry Department.

2. Paper-chromatography for Ornithine/any amino acid [specify] – Fasting sample both blood 2 ml (By syringe collection) in ACD and 5 ml urine.

3. Paper-chromatography for any sugar e.g. Galactose/fructose- One Heparin vacutainer/5 ml urine (fasting condition)

ELISA for Homocystine- One EDTA vacutainer (2ml) in fasting condition plasma to be separate and send immediately.
Aminoacid profile, HPLC-plasma 2ml in ACD vial (By syringe collection) in fasting condition
Aminoacid profile,HPLC-urine in fasting condition
Microalbumin – Sterile urine in fasting condition. Creatinine to be done for calculation. The above test are to be sent by courier on the same day/
Random Specimen
Glycosylated Haemoglobin - One vacutainer 2ml of EDTA
One Plain 4ml vacutainer for ceruloplansim , uric acid, AST, Serum Lactate dehyrdogenase,
Trace elements 4 ml plain and Heparin to be collected
For Serum Iron, TIBC and Percentage saturation testing the patient are instructed to report for blood collection at the collection area between 9 am and 11 am without fasting.
One 4ml heparin for serum Amylase.

Instructions to Patients coming for serum Vitamin A and E testing: The patient should not take any Vitamin tonics/ Leafy Vegetables for 2 days prior to the test. 5ml plain sample to be collected and separate the serum and send with patient history.

Instructions to Patients coming for serum Vitamin C testing: Any medications are taken by patient to be asked 5 ml heparin to be collected.

Instructions to the patients who have undergone FFA (Fundus Fluorescein Angiography)
In the above mentioned conditions the patients are instructed not to give blood for 48 hours after the FFA for the following test,
1. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) 5ml plain sample separate the serum and send it.
2. Plasma Homocystine.

Electrophoresis for Protein and Lipo protein Serum/urine/CSF:
4ml plain vacutainer tube to be collected and separate the serum and send it on the same day.

G6PD: can be done at SNK itself.

Antioxidants along with the package Vitamin also will be done: 3EDTA, 2 plain and 2 Heparin to be collected send the sample without separation. Plain sample alone to be separate for vitamin analysis and send it.

Minerals: Copper/Zinc/Selenium/Iron. 4ml palin sample to be collected.

Blood pyruvate and lactate: 2 ml whole blood to be added in 4ml of perchloric acid for pyruvate and lactate. Separate the supernatant and send it.

Urine Inborn errors and metabolism need Fasting Specimen: For all “Fasting Specimen” collection the patient is instructed to have dinner the previous night not later than 9 p.m. (the range for fasting is 8 to 12 hours) and following this not to eat or drink except water till he reports to the laboratory. The below mentioned test are to be collected and sent to SN- Main Special biochemistry Department.
